Veteran's Story: Roy Elrod Jr.

In Liberty, South Carolina, U.S. Army Veteran Roy Elrod Jr. recently received an upgrade to his home through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) Program and generous funding from The Home Depot Foundation.

This project, managed by Lamar Austin and completed by the Golden Corner Chapter, included the construction of a new deck, a much-needed solution that restored accessibility, safety, and dignity for Roy and a fellow Veteran in the household.

Roy's Service:

Born in 1945, Roy Elrod Jr. proudly served in the United States Army from October 25, 1963, to October 24, 1966, during the Vietnam War era. He was honorably discharged with the rank of E-4 / SP4 (T) and remains an important member of his community as a Veteran.

A Need for Safety and Accesibility:

Roy had been dealing with mobility issues that make navigating stairs difficult and even dangerous. His existing deck had deteriorated significantly, with wood in such poor condition that food deliveries and daily access to his door had become unsafe.

Recognizing these challenges, Roy reached out to Purple Heart Homes for support, and the Golden Corner Chapter responded with action.

A Community Effort:

Thanks to the dedication of 15 volunteers, this project logged an incredible 330 volunteer hours. Together, they demolished the unsafe structure and built a new, stable, and accessible deck that allows Roy to safely receive deliveries, connect with visitors, and maintain his independence at home.
